Accessible Climate Strategies
A Human Rights Imperative
People with disabilities (PWDs) are on the front lines of climate change.
We face greater risks during extreme weather and climate -related disasters. Outdated infrastructure leaves us exposed. Damaged infrastructure affects our crucial supports. And both climate migration and climate austerity threaten to leave us behind.
PWDs get huge benefits from well-designed mitigation and resilience.
Cheap, reliable, renewable energy helps PWDs with medical equipment like wheelchairs and ventilators. Smart, sustainable urbanism and transit improve independence and quality of life. Disability-inclusive disaster readiness and response (DRR), proactive migration, and other resilience acts safeguard PWDs’ lives and well-being. The list goes on.
We must tackle disability and climate.
Yet society falls short.
Disability is under-addressed in climate mitigation and resilience.
Climate is under-addressed in disability advocacy and policymaking.
And stakeholders who try to tackle the disability-climate nexus can’t find the training or support they need.
That’s where ACS comes in.
